The Dedication And Grind Of Growing Streamers: In Conversation With Chopkoh And Gwenleanne

It takes dedication, and perseverance to succeed in the demanding and competitive world of streaming. To understand the experiences, difficulties, and guidance for aspiring streamers, we dived into the journeys of two streamers, Chopkoh and Gwenleanne.

Streaming is an evolving landscape, and their insights provide valuable lessons for anyone looking to enter the industry. Beyond their individual experiences, I also want to explore what it truly takes to succeed as a streamer. Should you even become a streamer? And how can we, as viewers, support smaller creators who are putting in the effort to grow? While both Chopkoh and Gwennleanne have built incredible communities, their journeys haven’t been without struggle. Streaming is a constant grind, one that requires not only consistency but also resilience in the face of slow growth, algorithm challenges, and the competitive nature of content creation. However, their experiences prove that with authenticity, persistence, and a strong support system, the effort can pay off.

The Scream Queen, known professionally as Chopkoh, is a dedicated Twitch streamer from Kentucky who has developed a positive and lively community. She frequently streams Dead by Daylight, a multiplayer horror game where one person assumes the role of a killer and four attempt to survive. Chopkoh entertains her audience with her trademark chaotic yet fun energy while navigating exhilarating chases and heart-pounding escapes. Every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, she streams live, bringing her community an engaging and interactive experience.

Having been part of Chopkoh’s community for a while, I’ve seen firsthand how she creates a space that feels less like a chatroom and more like a family. Her streams are a whirlwind of humour, chaos, and energy that keep viewers interested not just in the gameplay but also in the sense of community that she fosters. Her success has encouraged many others to start streaming themselves, demonstrating the power of a supportive community to inspire new artists.

Gwenleanne is a 23-year-old university student from Nova Scotia, Canada, who has cultivated a welcoming and inclusive streaming community. As a variety streamer, she plays a mix of games, including Apex Legends, Skyrim, Star Citizen, The Witcher 3, and Valorant. Her streams focus on positivity, engagement, and making viewers feel like part of a family. Whether she's exploring vast open worlds or diving into fast-paced multiplayer action, Gwenleanne brings an authentic and interactive experience to her audience. She also keeps her community updated by posting her next stream schedule in her Discord server, ensuring everyone stays connected.

Gwennleanne’s streams radiate warmth and inclusivity, making everyone feel like they belong. Being a long-time member of her community, I’ve witnessed the genuine care she puts into fostering a space where viewers aren’t just spectators but part of something greater. Her style is different from Chopkoh’s: less chaotic, more relaxed but equally engaging. She proves that a successful streamer isn’t just about high-energy entertainment; it’s about creating a meaningful connection with your audience. Many have walked away from her streams not just as fans but as aspiring creators, motivated to build their own positive spaces within the gaming world.

Their personal journeys and what inspired them to stream

Chopkoh’s passion for gaming started early, playing classics like Metal Gear Solid and Crash Bandicoot with her dad. Her transition to streaming was encouraged by her husband, who recognized her love for gaming and entertaining. As a stay at home mom, streaming became an outlet for social interaction and self-expression. Despite initial doubts, she took the leap and quickly found herself drawn into the tight-knit, supportive world of streaming.

Unlike many who started gaming at a young age, Gwenleanne discovered her passion later in life. It wasn’t until her university years that she began gaming seriously, but with Covid-19, she was able to rediscover and embrace the hobby fully. Streaming provided an escape, and what started with a few viewers gradually grew into a community. She attributes her success to persistence, a love for gaming, and an authentic approach to content creation.

Why should or shouldn’t you become a streamer?

Streaming can seem like a dream job, but it’s not for everyone. If you’re passionate about gaming, enjoy engaging with an audience, and can handle the ups and downs of content creation, it might be worth pursuing. However, if you’re expecting instant fame or find the idea of consistently putting yourself out there exhausting, it may not be the right fit. Success in streaming is a long game, requiring patience and perseverance.

How would you describe your streaming style?

Chopkoh: Chaotic but fun! I love keeping my streams high-energy and engaging. I don’t hold back on being myself, and I think that’s what keeps people coming back.

Gwenleanne: For me, it’s all about positivity and inclusivity. I want my stream to be a safe, welcoming space where people feel valued. Engaging with my audience is my top priority.

Have you faced any challenges as a streamer?

Chopkoh: Absolutely. As a female streamer, you deal with a lot of sexism and inappropriate comments. But I don’t let that negativity get to me. I focus on creating a positive space and keep moving forward.

Gwenleanne: Harassment is unfortunately common, especially for women in the industry. But I set clear boundaries, if someone crosses the line, they’re out. I refuse to let toxicity take over my space.

Do you think the streaming industry has become more inclusive?

Chopkoh: It’s definitely better than it used to be, but there’s still work to do. Women and marginalized groups are making strides, but we need to keep pushing for equal treatment.

Gwenleanne: There’s progress, but some gaming genres, especially FPS are still tough for women. The moment people hear your voice, you can feel the shift. I hope we see more change in the future.

How has your community impacted your journey?

Chopkoh: My community means everything to me. They’ve supported me through tough times and made streaming more than just a hobby, it’s a way to connect with amazing people.

Gwenleanne: I consider my community like family. Streaming isn’t just about me; it’s about the people who come to watch, interact, and feel like they belong.

What advice would you give to new streamers?

Chopkoh: Be yourself. Don’t try to fit into a mold of what you think people want — you’ll burn out. The right audience will find you if you stay authentic.

Gwenleanne: Find supportive communities and build connections. Streaming can feel lonely, but having friends in the industry makes a huge difference. Also, don’t forget about your mental health, take breaks when you need them.

What’s your setup like, and what do you recommend for beginners?

Chopkoh: I started with just a headset and reading chat from my phone. You don’t need fancy gear, just start, and upgrade as you go.

Gwenleanne: You don’t need the most expensive mic or camera to be successful. Focus on good lighting and sound quality first, then upgrade as needed.

As a viewer, I think these different styles highlight one of the most exciting aspects of Twitch: there's truly something for everyone. Whether you enjoy high-energy, chaotic gameplay or a more relaxing, community-driven experience, finding a streamer that resonates with you makes all the difference.

After being able to talk to these streamers, it showed me how much personality and heart goes into what they do. It’s not just about putting on a show, it’s about building something real with their communities. That vibe is what makes Twitch so cool and has also inspired me to start my own Twitch journey pretty soon!

Becoming a successful streamer isn’t easy. It requires determination, authenticity, and the ability to overcome obstacles. Chopkoh and Gwenleanne’s stories remind us that success is built on consistency, passion, and community. For aspiring streamers, the key is to keep grinding, be patient, and find what makes you unique in the space. If you’re not a streamer but love watching content, remember that your support is crucial. Whether it’s following, subscribing, or simply engaging with a streamer’s content, small actions go a long way in helping creators grow. So go out there, find a streamer you love, and show them some support!

You can find both CHOPKOH and Gwenleanne on Twitch.
